Round 1 - Welcome
First of all welcome to my new boxing blog. I plan to do this every week and cover 12 topics (rounds) on whats going on in boxing now, in the past and the future. I have used the alias The Outsider....as thats exactly what I am. I have no inside knowledge of the Sweet Science. The blog will be made up of my personal thoughts and rumours I have heard.
Round 2 - I can't see!!!
Mikkell Kessler is injured and has pulled out of the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic. Something to do with muscle tissue in the eye!! It's a real shame as Kessler is an exciting fighter and a re-match with Carl Froch would be one of the most anticipated fights in boxing. Showtime should make Froch vs Abraham, and Green vs Ward the semi finals and with Allan Green........who cares.
Round 3 - Someone cares
Ok so some people do care. Maybe give him a shot agaisnt Beibut Shumenov (WBA Light Heavyweight Champion) on Showtime at the end of the year, a logical fight for both.
Round 4 - Now the little ones are at it
Next up for Showtime is a 4 man tournement at 118lbs featuring Vic Darchinyan, Abner Mares, Joseph Agbeko and IBF belt holder Yhonny Perez. Rumours of a November 6th date are premature, its likley the tournement will begin December 18th. Do not get me wrong, 3/4 great fight will happen....but whats the point of a tournement without the two best fighters in the division (Fernando Montiel & Anselmo Moreno). Still a nice way to finish the year.
Round 5 - ........and another bloody one
Speaking of the Super 6, German based promoters the Sauerlands looks set to create a Cruiserweight version. The deffinate entrants will be Steve Cunningham (IBF) and Marco Huck (WBO) who faced eachother in 2007 with Cunningham coming out on top. The other 4 will be made up from Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (WBC), Guillermo Jones (WBA) Steve Herelius, Dennis Lebedev, BJ Flores, Troy Ross, Danny Green, Alexander Frenkel, Yoan Pablo Hernandez and maybe even Britains European champion Enzo Macceranelli.
Round 6 - So on November 6th...
According to Steve Kim of maxboxing.com November 6th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada, will be the resheduled match between WBO title holder Juan Manuel Lopez and future Hall of Famer Rafael Marquez. It should be a cracker.
Round 6 - Adameck struggles
Polish Heavyweight Tomasz Adamek laboured to an entertainig 12 round unaminous decision againt former Lennox Lewis foe Michael Grant the past weekend. Adameck, a former Light Heavyweight and Cuierweight champion, goes to 4-0 as a Heavyweight and is now the number 1 contender with the IBF & WBO, the belts held by the RING and ESB World Heavyweight Champion. Adameck is the favoured next opponent for the three Heavyweigh belt holders (Klitskco's & Haye) among boxing fans.
Round 7 - Twitter!!
Is it me, or do some of the fighters these days seem to spend more time on twitter and actually training. I am willing to bet more boxers have twitter fights than scheduled opponents right now.
Round 9 - Ginge is back
Hot prospect George Groves will defend his Commonwealth Super Middleweight title on October 30th, York Hall, Bethnel Green in London. It will be live on Sky Sports, promoted by Hayemaker who have TV dates with Sky for Groves (His contract with Maloney is up) Hammersmith born Groves will find it tough to find an opponent with other domestic 168lbs fighters otherwise occupied, or moving to other weight divisions. Paul David, the English champion and Prizefighter runner up, seems like the favourite at the moment.
Round 10 - Luevao retires
Former WBO Featherweight champion Steven Luevano has retired from the sport. He will be best known for his title victory in London agaisnt Nicky Cook. He defended the WBO 126lbs title 5 times before losing to Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez. Good luck to him in whatever he decides to do in the future.
Round 11 - Prediction time
Ivan Calderon vs Giovanni Segura for the WBO, WBC, RING & ESB World Light Flyweight titles. The matador vs the bull once again. Its all about what Calderon has left. I was leaning towards Segura but I think Calderon has enough to take a 117-111 UD with the odd shaky moment. Calderon just has to much skill for a crude banger like Segura.
Round 12 - Youtube recomendation
Ok....each week in Round 12 I am going to recomend a Youtube video for you all to watch. It will be anyhting from fights, clips, press confrences, weight in brawls.....anything from boxing I find intresting.
